Playfully titled after a bird that lays its eggs in other birds’ nests, Pīpīwharauroa Shining Cuckoo is a joint presentation between Sumer and Laree Payne Gallery, our good friends from over the Kaimai range. The presentation was originally scheduled to take place in the Chairman’s Suite at Park Hyatt Auckland; however current Covid restrictions have meant that this is regrettably not possible, and thus Sumer is now hosting the presentation at its gallery in Tauranga.
The show presents a diverse grouping of new and recent work by artists from both galleries. A selection of work that might be akin to a collector's approach: the connections subjective and responsive, where works can speak on their own merits. We have opted for a good dose of bold colour, humour and good energy—something we feel is certainly needed right now.
Pīpīwharauroa Shining Cuckoo features artworks by Henry Curchod, Emily Ferretti, Teelah George, Andrew Hazewinkel, Maioha Kara, Sam Kelly, Lara Merrett, Rachel Hope Peary, Tia Ranginui, Sam Rountree Williams, Nichola Shanley, Sarah Smuts-Kennedy, Ella Sutherland, Kathy Temin and Jan van der Ploeg
