Sandra Bushby & Cindy Huang: Melbourne Art Fair

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, 20 - 23 February 2025

Sumer is pleased to participate in the 2025 edition of the Melbourne Art Fair, with a two-person presentation by Aotearoa New Zealand artists Sandra Bushby and Cindy Huang. The showing comprises a suite of new paintings by Bushby, in oil on linen (all 2024-25), alongside Huang’s most recent body of work, Offering (2024), a series of small sculptures in bronze. And as neither artist has exhibited in Australia previously, the gallery is delighted to introduce the work of these two impressive women artists to new audiences here.

In the past two years both artists have each mounted successful solo exhibitions, not only as part of Sumer’s main gallery program, but also both with various public art galleries located across Aotearoa. Nevertheless, our choice to present Bushby and Huang’s works together at this year’s fair was principally informed by the artists’ themselves; and for the synergies and kinship connecting their works. For while they pursue distinctly different approaches in their art making, not only in terms of material and form, but also subject and conceptual modality (Sandra, with a painting practice, ostensibly abstract; and Cindy, with a cross-disciplinary research-led practice, best known for her figurative sculpture in clay and bronze); they nevertheless share an appreciation of the lyrical and poetic, and an approach to narrative and meaning that is quietly elusive.

Please contact the gallery should you wish to receive a catalogue for our fair presentation.
